KaVo Key 3 Laser
Lasers have come a long way since we were kids. Who would
have thought the technology we knew as the weapon of choice
for aliens bent on galactic domination would some day
be used to fight cavities?
Whether the target is earthlings or tooth decay, lasers
work by emitting a high-energy beam of light that vaporizes
matter. Unlike the B-movie variety, dental and medical
lasers are so precise they can zap damaged cells without
harming surrounding ones.
This makes them ideal for delicate procedures related
to your gums and teeth. Safe and pain-free, lasers not
only minimize the use of the dental drill but also eliminate
the need for freezing in most cases.
Metropolitan Dental is one of only a handful of practices
in Ottawa that offer laser dentistry, and among the select
few in Ontario equipped with a KaVo Key 3. Its built-in
diagnostic capability enables our dentists to remove decay
without affecting the healthy tissue, so as much of the
original tooth structure as possible is left intact.
Lasers also reduce the risk of infection by killing the
bacteria that cause cavities and sterilizing the exposed
surface of the tooth prior to a filling or other restoration.
They can also be used to desensitize teeth that are sensitive
to cold.
Probably one of the best features of the Kavo Key 3 laser
is its use for treating periodontal disease. Our hygienists
have been specially trained to use the laser to treat
problems from bleeding gums to deep pockets or spaces
around the teeth where plaque and tarter build up and
cause gum disease. This laser is so advanced over other
lasers that it can determine what needs to be removed
under the gums and what doesn’t. This way you get very
conservative treatment that in the end is much easier
and faster for you in the healing process. This is just
one more way that we’re trying to ensure that you keep
your teeth for a lifetime.
With laser dentistry, there are no incisions or stitches
for soft-tissue surgery such as gum therapy and gum contouring or treatments for cankers
and cold sores. Because the high-energy
beam minimizes bleeding and disinfects the tissue at the
same time , the healing process is also much faster.
